Considering this cost less than $70, this little player is great. I would consider this a great transition piece for someone looking to switch from online to offline music listening. Comes pre-loaded with all the streaming services shown in the picture – so you won't need to sign into your google account to get started. Will support up to 2TB media cards but may have to be Fat32 formatted (I have them formatted that way for another player – so I haven't checked if ExFat works). It's also easy to sideload apps like Onkyo's excellent HF Player app. Sideloading helps to keep this offline (if that's what you are looking for).
I have an expensive, Sony DAP and I prefer this for these reasons:
1. Starts up quick. The Sony takes several minutes to start, this one is about 30 seconds or less (haven't timed it, but it's quick).
2. It runs Android 13 (Sony is 12).
3. It's snappier and more responsive than the Sony.
4. Seems to get better battery life – haven't run a full run-down test yet, but this player holds on to its battery. Plus, with it starting up quick, you don't have to think about setting the built-in shut down timer to 10 minutes to conserve battery. The Sony would take half that time just to start up.
Comes with applied screen protector and a case in the box. It's a lightweight, plastic build, so it's easy to carry around in your bag or pocket and for what it costs, it's not something you have to treat as precious. I've listened with high-end headphones, and it sounds good to me. I have no complaints on the sound quality – though I am not as picky as I used to be. One drawback that I can see is that it charges slow, but if you are in the habit of overnight charging, this won't be an issue.
I wouldn't hesitate to recommend this player for anyone looking to move to a dedicated music player. About to pick up a second one for my kid who is looking to do just that.
