GPS is terrible but phone call quality is very good.

3 out of 5 stars

GPS is terrible but phone call quality is very good.
I bought this watch with the sole intention to track my autistic 8 year old daughter who has begun eloping again after figuring out how to unlock the extra locks I had placed at the top of the door frames. I needed something I could get her to wear almost 24/7 because she will randomly leave the house with no warning and bring nothing with her not even her shoes. I thought a watch like this could fit the bill. After receiving the product we've had issues from day one but they might be improving. It arrived in dirty scratched up boxes. Note that it's scratched behind the purple wrapping which was also scratched which made me think it was a used product but upon opening it seemed original. Just really rough with their products during packaging maybe? Set up took a bit and was all done online and through apps, no phone calls necessary. After setup I couldn't get it to update it's software to save my life (when I would press the install button for the update it would do nothing but beep). Then yesterday out of nowhere it randomly hung up a call from her grandma and auto updated on it's own yesterday and was unusable for 5-10m. What if it had been an emergency situation and it hung up to auto update for 10m when she was trying to get help? If it's about to update it should make you aware. I would prefer if it either ask first, send a notification there is an update so you can choose when it updates or only auto update if it's on the charger and not in use. So we have a negative star for that.My daughter's favorite thing to do with this watch has been to call relatives especially her grandma when she's having emotional dysregulation to help her calm down. She has complained about the watch getting hot on her arm and wanting it off after voice calls. We haven't even tried the video feature as that actually has an actual warning that pops up that it could get hot on her skin. If the voice call sometimes makes it too hot for her how hot would the video chat get if they had to put a warning when you try to video call? Negative star for heat issue. On to the GPS. The one feature I got it for and so far it's been terrible. It puts her location all over my city miles away from her actual location. The airtag I used before this did a better job of tracking her and that almost never ever updated but at least it was closer to her actual location. Before I got the watch I made sure that the service should be good in this area but it constantly says either 0 or 1 bar of service. I don't know if this is an issue with the watch or the service provider but it also prioritizes the cellular to track her and is way off almost 100% of the time. I've attached photos of it showing her location MILES from my house because it keeps using cellular instead of gps or even the wifi I connected it to at our house. That auto update from last night did seem to make the GPS more accurate though and for the first time it showed her in our house. I'll have to do a little more monitoring of it to see how much it's improved it's accuracy but because of these issues I'm currently on the fence about returning this product or waiting to see if it will improve with more updates. I have removed a star for the GPS issues but if it has improved I will add the star back. So far after monitoring it for the day it has not and currently shows her on the highway miles away when I know she is at her school. One more thing to note is there is no live tracking. You have to press the little icon at the top left of the app and wait for it to refresh to get it to update instead of real time tracking. UPDATE: The GPS does seem to have improved. It starts by showing her location from the cellular when opening the app but updating her location gets it pretty close with GPS or Wifi. It shows her between our house and the neighbors most times when she is home but that is close enough that if we were out at a park and she was that far away then yelling her name and calling her would help us find her. If your child is nonverbal you might have a harder time but my daughter is no longer at that stage so the watch is currently working for us as we had hoped.A little about the other features of the watch. You can choose which contacts to add, she cannot add any herself and you can choose to block any unknown numbers, disable the number pad and remove the calling police feature all of which I am grateful for. My daughter would be getting phone numbers from anyone who would give it to her or even calling the police or random numbers as she has absolutely no sense of danger and loves to talk with anyone and everyone so the fact that she can't is a relief to me. It feels very safe in that aspect for her first phone. A few things I would like to see is the ability to toggle a contact off if she is calling them too often or while they are at work instead of having to remove the contact entirely and having to re-add the contact when she is allowed to call them again and also the ability to use her contacts picture as the image in the menu for quick dialing instead of an emoji face. It gets confusing when she's trying to figure out which emoji grandma means which grandma. Call quality was excellent. I can hear her when she calls me and people that's she's talking to from her watch very well with no issues. You can disable the watch during school hours so they don't mess around and play with it when they should be focusing on school work. This feature was very helpful since she tried to do just that. As soon as it started working again after school she was calling me from the hallway and then again from her bus to tell me how great her day was. 😂 My only complaint is that I wish they had an option to choose Weekdays or Weekends from the list when you are setting this up instead of having to set each day individually. You can see your location on the map as well by clicking the ME icon to see your position relative to theirs. This would be helpful if your child had eloped and you were actively looking for them but for this to be most effective the GPS would have to be fixed.Something I didn't like is that any edit you make to the watch makes it beep and make noises so you wouldn't be able to edit something in the app while they are at school because their watch would be making all kinds of noises and lighting up during class. This should be able to be done silently without bringing attention to it.All the Messaging and Video Calls are made through the Tick Talk app which means anyone who wants to Text or Video Chat with your child must follow the link provided by the parent and install the tick talk app on their phone to use these features as opposed to the regular voice calls which do not have to be made through the app and can be dialed by an approved contact through your phone as normal without installing apps. This makes some of the features unusable if contacts don't want to install a separate app on their phone.

TickTalk Watch: A Game-Changer for Families, Especially Those with Special Needs!

NOTE: for reference, my son is 15 and very high-functioning, however, he would easily be distracted by and mostly likely ‘lose’ a phone.

We recently purchased the TickTalk watch for our teenage son with special needs as an alternative to a traditional smartphone. This device has been nothing short of a lifesaver for our family! It perfectly bridges the gap between staying connected and maintaining focus without the distractions of internet access or social media—which are not allowed at school anyway.

What We Love:
1. Ease of Setup and Use: From unboxing to setup, everything about the TickTalk watch is designed with simplicity in mind. It took mere minutes to get it fully operational, thanks to the detailed instructions and intuitive parent app.
2. Reliable GPS and Cellular Connectivity: The GPS accuracy is spot on, offering us peace of mind knowing exactly where our son is at all times. Cellular connectivity is reliable, ensuring texts and calls go through without a hitch.
3. Durable and Stylish Design: The watch is both sleek and rugged, standing up to the daily wear and tear of an active teenager. Our son loves wearing it and has never misplaced it—a big win in our house!
4. Parental Control Features: The parent app gives us comprehensive control, allowing us to customize who can contact our son and when. It’s a powerful tool that gives us confidence he’s safe without compromising his independence.
5. Outstanding Customer Service: TickTalk’s customer service is truly next level. Whether via email or a phone call (yes, they actually answer the phone), their team is incredibly helpful and responsive.

The One Drawback:
The only con we’ve found is that the band comes in just one size, which may not be ideal for children with larger wrists or older kids. While it fits our son, we can see this being a challenge for others.

Final Thoughts:
The TickTalk watch has been a perfect solution for our family, providing a secure, distraction-free way for our son to stay in touch with us and his trusted friends. It’s durable, easy to use, and backed by exceptional customer service.

For any family, especially those with special needs children, this watch is a must-have! I honestly wish they marketed it more for kiddos with special needs who don’t need a full monitoring system. Highly recommend!

Pros:
– Love the video call option!
– Very good connectivity
– Helpful notifications
– Super easy to get activated
– Able to monitor his messages from my phone

Cons:
– Tracking is not accurate at all! Even when at home connected to home network, the watch is always tracked miles away. I can’t tell whether my son is at home or school because it tracks him close to the same phone tower. Completely useless unless knowing their city location is good enough for you.
– You have to call and text through the app which is a bit of a hassle, but most importantly, it often causes delays in notifications when the app is not consistently updating
– The band is too small (my regular-size 8 yo says it’s too tight). I haven’t been able to find options for a different band
– His watch always defaults to use Wi-Fi calling. Not great if you’re on the move and not tied to great internet connection.
– Text messages are automatically blocked, even if they are from approved contacts (or me!). It seems the only way to communicate is through the app.

The TickTalk 5 Cellular Kids Smart Watch could be a fantastic choice for your 9-year-old! Here’s a summary of its features and how they might suit both you and your child.

Safety and Connectivity: The TickTalk 5 allows you to stay connected with your child through phone calls, video calls, and text messages. Since it supports 4G, this means a clear connection almost anywhere, which gives peace of mind when he’s out or at school.

Kid-Friendly Features: The TickTalk 5 is designed for kids with a durable, water-resistant build. The interface is straightforward, and it has parental controls that allow you to monitor and limit usage. Your child can also enjoy age-appropriate features, like customizable watch faces and a reminder system for school or extracurricular activities.

Location Tracking: This feature is especially handy for parents, as the watch includes real-time GPS tracking. You can see where he is at any given time and set up “safe zones” to receive alerts if he moves out of designated areas.

Battery Life and Charging: The watch has a reasonably good battery life (usually a full day on a single charge), which is essential for active kids who may not remember to charge it regularly.

Entertainment and Education: The watch offers basic entertainment options like music, which your child might enjoy. While it doesn’t support advanced apps, it keeps distractions minimal, which can be helpful for maintaining focus.

Considerations:

You may need a compatible cellular plan, which adds an extra cost.
Some parents report that the app for parents could be more intuitive.
Overall, the TickTalk 5 strikes a good balance between functionality and fun, making it suitable for kids who are old enough for some independence but still need parental oversight.
